If you are not moving overseas maybe you should consider a DIY do-it-yourself move and let the government pay you. The government will pay you 95% (eff. 2/1/98) of the cost it would have paid a contractor for transportation, equipment and labor. You will have to budget for all your own expenses including a moving truck, fuel, packing supplies, damages and labor.
Organization is the key to a successful move. Plan on packing a least a month before you move. Remember when the government moves you they label everything in boxes for you. This is somewhat tedious but you will have to do this yourself in a DITY. Keep and index of your boxes and their content. In a DITY, you will be bearing the burden of loading the rental truck yourself. You may choose to recruit some of your friends in exchange for free dinner. In addition, in a DITY, the money you receive is taxed but every expense related directly with the move is deductable. Make sure to obtain a list of everything that is exempt from your Permanent Change of Station. Insurance is another consideration. Make sure to insure those antiques handed down to you by your great-great-grandmother. When deciding on whether to rent a truck or get a full service mover consider the cost vs. convenience ratio. You may save 2/3 the cost of a full service mover but gain 2/3 or more, the inconvenience of driving your rental truck across the country. Some of the issues you need to consider if you DITY using a rental truck include driving a 28'+ trailer across many, many miles of interstate highways, varying weather, varying fuel cost, the condition of the truck and a myriad of unforeseen events. When you hire a full-service or semi-service mover, the company bears these burdens. The information herein provided "as is" without warranties, express or implied | Find a Realtor
